About her experience as a mentor though MEDA, Kara Wood, Economic Development Director, City of Grand Rapids, said, “My experience with mentoring an aspiring economic developer through MEDA was not only simple, but very rewarding. It is through internships, job shadowing, and mentoring that I believe you find your passion and why I participate. MEDA sent me the information on interested candidates and I welcomed in all candidates interested in Grand Rapids, arranged a day full of typical activities, such as retention visits, city commission meetings, project meetings and partner engagements tailored upon the individual's interests. Participation for me meant that I was contributing to the future of economic development in Michigan.”

Ideas for Connecting With a Mentee

Being a mentor does not have to take up a large amount of your time.

Here are some ideas:

  • Allow them to job shadow with you for a day
  • Connect on LinkedIn and chat
  • Meet for lunch
  • Schedule a phone call

What to Know First

  • The program must facilitate a mutually fulfilling relationship between the mentees and the mentors wherein both parties serve as beneficiary and contributor.
  • Act as an advocate for promoting and recruiting other professionals.
  • There must be direct interaction with mentees. Sitting behind a desk processing paperwork is not an acceptable Mentorship Connection program activity.
